Money does’t drive this tennis champion

LOVE OF THE GAME: Serena, 36

Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time - but she’s not motivated by money.

In an interview with Uninterrupted, the 35-year-old champ revealed she didn’t even bother to memorialise her first cheque for $1 million in winnings.

“I never touched it” she began, referencing her first big time payment.

“I just put it in the bank” she continued, before admitting, “I just remember I went through the drive-through to deposit my cheque. They were like, ‘I think you need to come in for this.’ So I ended up going inside.”

It seems she truly had no interest in the funds, as she has no record of receiving the epic amount.

“I should have taken a picture of it. Selfies didn’t exist back then,” she lamented.

Money never seemed to figure into the athlete’s mind as she continued to destroy opponents and set records during her career.

“I’ve actually never played for money. I thought you would just go out there and … hold a trophy.”

Now the super athlete, who is expecting her and fiancé Alexis Ohanian’s first baby in September, says she wasn’t actually aware of how the funds were even distributed to winning players.

“Not once did I think about a cheque. In fact, when I first turned pro, you had to go pick up your cheque.

“At the end of the year, the tournament directors would literally hand me the cheque because I would never go get it. I just played for the love of the sport.”
