The kids from the Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) are hitting the big stage because Life Is Beautiful.

That is the title of their latest play and the cast of 20 youngsters, most of them school kids are taking it to the Artscape Theatre stage.

No one is happier than BTC Artistic Director Theo E Davids who says this is a story that the laaities came up with themselves.

“The idea came from the youth who felt that we should be paying tribute to our local musicians from the 70s and 80s who sacrificed a lot and died impoverished as paupers,” he says.

Life Is Beautiful is a musical and the story features a girl from Bridgetown who is at the centre of a bet between two ouens who want to see which one of them she chooses.

The girl eventually finds out that the guys were betting money to win her heart and the story has a surprising conclusion.

Theo says the story is set in present day Bridgetown but the music is a blast from the past.

He says: “This high energy, colorful and vibrant musical also pays tribute through its 100% use of local music to our musical heroes of the 1970s and 1980s like Jonathan Butler, Richard Jon Smith, Zayn Adams; Ricardo; Invaders, Basil “Manenberg” Coetzee; Robbie Jansen and many more.

”The play is now part of the Artscape Arts festival and is on stage on Wednesday 31 August.

Theo says they have come up with an innovate way for the kids to perform well at school and on the stage.

“I have an agreement with their parents, if they don’t produce the best results at school then they can’t be a part of the plays,” he says.

This is what has brought out the best in the youngsters when they sing and act. The chance to perform on the bigger stage at the Artscape and to a bigger audience has excited the kids.

Theo says: “Coming from the Bridgetown and Athlone areas and performing at the Artscape now gives them the self confidence and the courage that confirms their talent, especially if they want to pursue a career in the arts.”

Life Is Beautiful will be showcased at the Artscape tonight at 7.30pm

Tickets are available from Computicket and cost R40.
