‘Let the heroes rise’

EXCITED: Boks' Franco Smith

Twelve new Springbok players will play for their time against the Barbarians.

New Springbok assistant coach Franco Smith believes a new generation of heroes can emerge now.

Smith, who won the Currie Cup with the Free State Cheetahs last weekend, says: “There are 12 guys that will play for their country for the first time against the Barbarians and they will be highly motivated. That will certainly help us [unearth new talent].”

Apart from the new talent, there is also a question mark over who will take over as the
country’s number one hooker when captain Adriaan Strauss retires at the end of the tour.

One of the candidates,
Malcolm Marx, tells Netwerk24: “I don’t view it as a duel [with Bongi Mbonambi].

“Yes, both of us want to be in the starting line-up, but the best player must play.

“If it’s Bongs, I will accept it but will continue to give my best.”
