A matric learner believed to be a member of a gang has died at his school after he was knifed, allegedly by a fellow learner.
Avile Chris Nkontywana, 18, who apparently belonged to the Alaska gang was stabbed to death at Ihlumelo High School in Mbekweni, Paarl, on Monday.
Sources say the teen often posted the gang’s name on his Facebook page, accompanied by selfies.
“He goes by the name Avile Chris Alaska. Alaska is the gang he belonged to,” the man says.
Jessica Shelver, the spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schafer says they have increased security at the school.
“Our District has reported that a Grade 12 learner from Ihlumelo Senior Secondary was fatally stabbed at the school on Monday.
“There was a security guard on the premises at the time of the incident, however, this did not act as a deterrent.
“Emergency Security has been provided to the school and Safe Schools Officials will monitor the situation closely.”
Shelver says the names of the alleged killers have been handed over to police: “Police agreed to increase visibility at the school on Tuesday. Early indications are that the incident is allegedly gang-related.”
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut confirmed the incident, adding: “The circumstances are being investigated and no one has been arrested.”
