Apparently “Mad Mike” Whiddett was born that way. His mum says he was never content to ride his tricycle on the flat, it had to be ramps and steep hills.
Next for New Zealand-born Mike came BMX and Motocross, then freestyle motoX where his collection of broken bones earned him the nickname Mad Mike.
Then, in 2007, he cottoned on to the safety of the rollcage and his drifting career was born. Now, backed by some of the biggest brands in the game, he competes with four pro drift spec Mazda rotary-powered cars, and he wows the crowds across the globe, pushing the boundaries as an ambassador of the world’s fastest growing motorsport.
Mad Mike has driven some incredible runs, not least of which is Conquer the Crown which saw an epic drift up a mountain pass in New Zealand, and over 4.5 million views on YouTube.
He also created Red Bull Shifters in Auckland, a world first in that the run is electronically scored, with electronic trigger sensors scoring drivers’ proximity, all coming together in what is now known as high Octane Pin Ball.
He’s even in a game, the 2011 Need for Speed Unleashed features Mad Mike and his competition Mazda RX8. Both his RX7 and RX8 have been voted best looking drift cars by Speedhunters.com.
At Wheels of Fury, Mad Mike promises to be a guy to watch.
Catch the drift at GrandWest Casino on Saturday between 11am and 11pm. Tickets are available at Computicket, ranging from R50 to R350.
