STAR: Jimmy Nevis to perform at Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert.

Support local music at Artscape.

It’s time to jazz it up once again for the 16th annual Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert at the Artscape Theatre on Saturday.

This fundraiser has been supporting local talent annually and this year is no different.

Pop sensation Jimmy Nevis is the headline act and this Athlone boy needs no introduction.

Jimmy is an accomplished singer and songwriter and his hits like Heartboxing, Balloon and of course 7764 (a dedication to his Athlone childhood neighbourhood) are fan favourites.

There are two great bands to look forward to as well.

The Belhar Music Collective are a talented group of youngsters who started out in church and eventually ended up on big stages like the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Joining them is the Edujazz Big Band, a group of really talented music students from the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and Rondebosch Boys High School.

They rocked the stage at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival so they will definitely make the jol vol.

Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at African Equity Empowerment Investments LTD, Cherie Hendricks, urges mense to support the jol with a good cause.

She says: “The objective of the concert is to raise funds for educational bursaries for impoverished students in the Western Cape, as well as promote the rich culture of jazz music in Cape Town, by staging a well-known group or artist alongside up-and-coming young artists from either primary or high schools.”

The show starts at 7.30pm at the Artscape Theatre and tickets are R95 and available from Computicket.

Cherie adds: “We look forward to making more music dreams come true as this project continues to grow year after year.”
