Staff at Newspaper House in Cape Town made 1800 sandwiches for Mandela Day.

The ingredients were collected by staff of Independent Newspapers who spent their 67 minutes for Madiba buttering bread and making toebroodjies.

The sarmies were taken to nearby Church Square where it was handed out with soup provided by Doppio Zero restaurant’s Ladles of Love project.

In other activities, with every street sale of Cape Argus, readers received a beanie which could be donated to a homeless person, while the Cape Times gave away a rain poncho with every street sale, also to be donated to a homeless person.
