GUNNED DOWN: Jason Cantebury, 24.

A 24-year-old man was gunned down outside a Cape Flats courthouse in a 'gang attack'.

A man was shot dead outside a Cape Flats courthouse in a suspected gang attack.

Eyewitnesses say a gunman walked up to 24-year-old Jason Cantebury and shot him in the chest in front of the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court in Myrtle Road yesterday.

The 25-year-old suspect fled on foot, but was arrested moments later.

Cops also found the murder weapon, which is believed to be a stolen police pistol, in a nearby dustbin.

After he was shot, Jason, a hawker outside the court, managed to run to a friend’s house where he collapsed and died in the backyard.

Yesterday his mother, Yolande Cantebury, 55, said her son was not a gangster despite residents’ claims that he was linked to the 28s gang.

“He was not a gangster, he was a Rasta,” she says.

Jason’s friend Yusirie Williams,19, says he couldn’t save his friend.

“I was standing a few steps away from him when [the gunman] walked right up to him and pointed to gun at him,” Yusirie says.

“I wanted to call Jason [to get away] but it was too late.

“If I called him it would have been me. He shot [Jason] and ran off, he handed the gun to someone else.

“We told the police who were around here and we saw them arrest him.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says the suspect will appear in court soon.

“The suspect fled the scene on foot in the direction of Elsies River but was arrested by police who were in the vicinity,” Van Wyk says.
