Guard shot dead during cash heist

SCENE: Heist at One-Up, Brown's Farm, Philippi

Seven armed robbers kill one and wound another before fleeing with bags of money and a stolen vehicle.

This was the scene where a security guard was killed after he and his partner were shot during a cash-in-transit heist.

About seven armed robbers stormed the One-Up shopping centre in Brown’s Farm, Philippi yesterday afternoon.

According to police, the robbers shot the guards before fleeing the scene in a hijacked vehicle with an undisclosed amount of money.

The two guards, both in their 20s, were shot from behind while carrying money bags from the centre.

One of the shopkeepers at the centre, Amin Badul, tells the Daily Voice they heard several gunshots go off before 3pm.

“We just hid ourselves until the gunshots stopped and when we came out, these two security guards were lying on the ground with blood everywhere,” he says.

“And the people who did this were long gone and so was the money.”

Police spokesman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says one of the officers died at the scene and his 29-year-old partner was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

“It is believed the suspects hijacked a vehicle as a getaway car and fled the scene with the money bags and when they reached Steve Tshwete Street in Brown’s Farm, they emptied the money bags and assaulted a community member,” she says.

“They dumped the vehicle and hijacked another one and left the empty money bags next to the vehicle.

The suspects were still at large.
