The excitement of being named in coach Allister Coetzee’s first Springbok squad is over now.
And the players are starting to feel the pressure of what it’s like during a Test week as they gear up for Saturday’s Newlands battle against Ireland (5pm).
It’s time to get down to business and captain Adriaan Strauss admits: “It does feel more intense [than last week]; I think we sorted out a couple of things last week – detail.
“We’re tightening up the screws this week. You can definitely feel it’s a bit more serious.”
Coetzee’s squad includes a number of uncapped players such as Faf de Klerk, Ruan Combrinck and Scarra Ntubeni among others and Strauss knows one of his most important jobs as a captain this week will be to bring calm to the international rookies ahead of such a big event.
He adds: “[It’s] always challenging for new guys entering the squad.
“The pressure will be building, but [we have] a lot of senior guys in the squad.
“A lot of guys have been through this before. It doesn’t have to be a nerve-wracking event, it can be exciting as well.”
