These golden oldies nearly caused a traffic jam in Northpine on Thursday when they did their aerobics exercises on an open field.
More than 40 older ladies sweated it out in the hot sun as they came out to raise awareness about health and fitness and the benefits of exercising outdoors.
Bradley Sirmongpong, a Playleader at Scottsdene Recreation Centre, in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, says their aim is to get more people moving without the need for expensive gym memberships.
Bradley says Scottsdene is a low-economic area where 50 percent of households earn less than R1 600 per month.
“Our various activities aim to uplift the standard of living of residents, especially those in disadvantaged communities and vulnerable groups,” he says.
“Besides being an excellent stress reliever, active participation in sport and recreation promotes a balanced, healthy lifestyle.”
“Exercising in the open air is much better as you feel that fresh air coursing through your veins.”
And the ladies agree, as even a woman who suffered a stroke briskly walked around.
Seventy-year-old Pam Anthony says: “I’ve been doing aerobics for three years to get fit and I am no longer complaining about aches and pains.
“I exercise twice a week, and really enjoyed today’s open air class.”
Lorraine Dowry, 65, encouraged those recovering from illnesses to join.
“Four years ago I had a stroke, which left me with a lame leg. Today I’m a different person, my leg is not as painful, my blood pressure has gone down and I feel great.”
Bradley also encouraged young people to join the class.
