Ajax Cape Town striker Joaquim “Jucie” Lupeta is confident he can score the goals that will turn his team’s fortunes around.
Winless all season, the Urban Warriors are rock-bottom of the PSL.
Goals have been the biggest problem for the Ikamva side as they struggle for results, leading coach Roger de Sa to call it quits at the end of last month.
They have only found the net five times in eight matches this season.
With top scorer Nathan Paulse, who has three of those, out with a facial injury, and Prince Nxumalo still struggling for fitness and form, Lupeta knows he needs to step up.
The Portuguese-born forward has already impressed new boss Stanley Menzo and is hoping to get a starting role when Ajax host Maritzburg United at Cape Town Stadium (8.15pm).
The 23-year-old hit form with a hattrick in a friendly win over Stellenbosch FC last week.
And while he is not worried about scoring goals, he admits that he needs to help the team off the ball too.
He says: “The team has not being doing well in terms of results, we haven’t won a game yet, but we are training hard and with the new coach we hope to get a first win [of the season] this weekend.
“The international break has been good, we played well against Stellenbosch – the whole team played well and the goals were good for my confidence.
“I have more confidence now – let’s see if I get to start on Saturday, if I don’t I will understand and continue to push myself.
“The problem is not goals, but my work without the ball – I still need to work on that part of my game. As players we must press [the opponents], do what the coach wants from us and I will only improve.
“Things are going very well and I am adapting very well to the coaches’ European methods.
Meanwhile, Diski Challenge coach Vladislav Heric has been helping the first team get their mojo back.
