Germany cruised into the quarterfinals of Euro 2016 with a commanding 3-0 over Slovakia and laid down a marker to the rest of the tournament’s title contenders.

It was sweet revenge for the world champions for a defeat in a 3-1 friendly in May.

Defender Jerome Boateng opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he was afforded too much space on the edge of the box and his sweet volley flew into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Mesut Ozil saw his weak 13th minute penalty effort saved, which would have put Joachim Low’s manne in complete control.

Julian Draxler set up Mario Gomez as the Germans took a two-goal cushion into the break.

The impressive Draxler got a goal of his own in the 63rd minute, smashing a loose ball in the box into the roof of the Slovakian net after being left unmarked in the six-yard box.

The Germans will play the winner of Spain and Italy in the final eight this Saturday.
