Conviction rate for Mitchells Plain's gang-crimes is a dismal 0.7%.

The conviction rate for gang-related crimes in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court stands at only 0.7 percent.

The information was released in a parliamentary reply by Western Cape Community Safety Minister Dan Plato.

Plato says the issue is a concern because it means small fry offenders are in jail and killers are roaming free.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille called on the police, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Justice Department to bring an end to the low conviction rate.
