Johann van Graan is the lone survivor of the Springbok coaching staff that lost to Ireland 29-15 on the Boks’ overseas tour in 2014 – the last time the two sides crossed swords.
Only four players who started that match – Tendai Mtawarira, Eben Etzebeth, Duane |Vermeulen and Willie le Roux – are currently in the Bok squad.
And while it will be in the back of their minds, Van Graan says Saturday’s contest between the two nations at Newlands will not be about revenge.
He explains: “Every Test match is a new beginning… we’ve already learnt a lot out of that match [in Dublin]…
“[But] the Irish coaching staff will bring something new and obviously coach Allister [Coetzee] and our coaching staff always looked at this Test series as a start and we’ll bring some new things, so no revenge.”
He adds: “[Coetzee] has made it very clear from the beginning; it’s a new start but he’s here to win Test matches.”
