At age 55, this Cape Flats dad will be the only one from the Western Cape who will be competing in the Natural Olympia in Las Vegas, known as the Olympics of natural bodybuilding.
In June, Jason Kleinsmidt achieved sixth place in the World Bodybuilding Championships which was held in Budapest.
Jason from Lentegeur, in Mitchells Plain, works for the Department of Community Safety and Security under the wing of MEC Dan Plato as part of his security personnel.
Plato previously commended Jason for his award-winning feats, saying he was an inspiration.
Jason is now training hard as he prepares for the biggest competition he’s ever taken part in.
More than 800 men and women from across the globe take part in the annual competition in Vegas, taking place from November 10 to 13.
This week the Daily Voice team caught up with Jason at Sibu’s home gym in Monte Claire, Mitchells Plain.
Jason, who weighs just over 90 kilograms, flexed and showcased his impressive spiere.
“I am very proud to be going to this competition for the second time in a row,” he says.
“I am the only person from the Western Cape who is competing, we are five from South Africa. When we competed in Budapest, we qualified for this competition.
“This is big, this the Olympics of Natural Bodybuilding.”
And the preparation is intense: “I eat eight pieces of chicken a day but split it into six meals.
“I also eat boiled eggs and have been carb-free for two months, which builds more muscle.”
