This is the scene captured just moments after cops arrested five gun-wielding hijackers.
Following a dramatic shootout which left one of the men injured, brave cops managed to arrest all five suspects.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says the drama began early Thursday when members from the Western Cape Flying Squad and Cape Town K9 Unit received information from the Provincial Command Centre of a hijacked vehicle and conducted patrols in Khayelitsha.
“At approximately 10.45am they spotted the vehicle, a black BMW that was hijacked in Milnerton earlier this month, in Harare, Khayelitsha.
“As they cautiously approached the vehicle it stopped, the doors flung open and five armed men jumped out, firing at the police members,” says Van Wyk.
“The members returned fire and the suspects fled in different directions.
“Swift action by the police resulted in the arrest of all five suspects, of which one was wounded. Three firearms, a .45 Special, a .38 Special and a 9mm were recovered.”
Van Wyk says after further investigation cops found an Uzzi semi-automatic and a 9mm pistol in a shopping bag on the roof of a nearby shack.
The five arrested men, aged from 26 to 35, from Khayelitsha and Kraaifontein are set to appear in Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once charged.
Van Wyk says the wounded man is being detained at a local hospital under police guard.
