Police are investigating the cause of a deadly fire that claimed the lives of a brother and sister.
One-year-old Jayden and his older sister Jawine Fransman, four, died when their Wendy house went up in flames in a mysterious fire on Sunday night.
Their older siblings Lee- Ann, 11, and Ashwin, nine, and parents Antoinette and Jimmy were rushed to hospital with burns.
The Fransmans are one of five families who lived on privately owned property in Langverwacht Street, Fisantekraal.
Property owner Jonathan Adams, 34, says he tried to douse the flames.
“The fire started in my backyard,” he says.
“Die kragpaal het geskiet, maar ek het alles probeer om die vlamme met ‘n groot emmer water te blus. [Jimmy] was lucky he didn’t burn his arm.”
Community leader and neighbour Elaine Hartsenberg says she saw Jawine burn to death.
“I could see him burn, it’s a sight I won’t easily forget,” the horrified woman says.
“It’s very sad because there was nothing we could do to help them,” she says.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says a death inquest case docket has been registered.
