A fishing vessel at Cape Town Harbour went up in flames yesterday with 800 000 styrofoam bakkies and 100 000l of diesel on board.
The fire started shortly after 10am and five fire crews battled to contain the blaze.
City of Cape Town’s fire services spokesperson Liezl Moodie confirmed that it was the Verona Port Villa ship that was on fire in the container section of the harbour.
Black plumes of smoke billowed from the vessel. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Fire and rescue spokesperson Theo Layne says: “Currently we have a total of 13 firefighting vehicles on the scene at the Cape Town harbour, where the fire is burning on the ship. Whilst it’s still contained, the extinguishing of the fire has to be done carefully in order not to cause the ship to list.”
