Election ‘shooter’ arrested
An elderly woman was shot and wounded in a 'gang-related shooting'.

Police were on high alert in Manenberg yesterday after a suspected gang shooting nearly disrupted Election Day.

A 61-year-old woman was shot and wounded when she was hit by a gangster’s bullet in Manenberg Avenue at about 10am.

Wakker cops patrolling at nearby voting stations arrested a 22-year-old suspect.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk says a case of attempted murder was opened for investigation.

“The circumstances where a 61-year-old lady who was walking to the shop was caught in the crossfire is under investigation,” Van Wyk says.

“The bullet struck her in her left side of her body. She was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

“A 22-year-old male suspect was brought in for questioning,” he says.

Meanwhile, community safety MEC Dan Plato, who was also on the scene, commended police for the swift response.

“I was there within minutes and witnessed police arresting the suspect,” Plato says.

“This obviously left people traumatised but police contained the situation.”

He said the shooter was brazen to attack with so many cops around.

“If this was an orchestrated move by anyone to try and disrupt the election then the plan failed and it could never have worked,” Plato says.

“I want to thank police for their swift action in making the arrest.”
