Two men arrested for packaging fake boxes of ‘Omo’ in Portland.

If you live in Mitchells Plain and your laundry is still dirty after washing, it’s probably because your washing powder is majat.

Cops have arrested two men for allegedly making fake washing powder and dishwashing liquid, which they place in Omo and Sunlight boxes.

A firearm and ammunition were also found hidden in a sock at the house in Winsor Street, Portland, on Sunday.

Police say the men, aged 23 and 21, will be charged with the manufacturing of counterfeit goods.

A third male, aged 25, was also busted and will be facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The trio are expected to appear in court this week.

Shocked neighbours say the two-bedroom house was sold earlier this year, and had begun to notice suspicious behaviour there.

Police believe the suspects have been selling the fake cleaning products to local shops.

Boxes of “Omo” were found stacked to the roof in one bedroom.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said they had no idea the house was being used a factory for counterfeit goods.

She says the previous owner had run a tuck shop from the house.

“The shop was closed a few months ago and the owner moved to New York,” says the housewife.

“Then we had these Somali males who were dressed very smartly arriving in expensive cars.

“They would always reverse the cars inside and would always lock the gates.

“We got such a big shock when we saw what was coming out of that house, and these two men who we never saw before.

“It’s a good thing (they were caught), although I use Surf and not Omo, that stuff will affect your skin perhaps.”

The neighbour added: “The police need to test the substance in a laboratory.”

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut, says the house had been under investigation for “months”.

He says when cops swooped, the suspects were “busy filling empty dishwashing liquid and washing detergent bottles with an unknown substance”.

“Two suspects were arrested for manufacturing of counterfeit goods. A male, 35 years old, was charged with the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
