Death and drama on ‘Idols SA’ stage

LOST CASE: Siyakha Tshayela

Audience learns of Kwaito star's passing and then a contestant has been given the 'exit ticket'.

The first results show for Idols SA season 12 got off to an emotional start with the announcement of the death of musician Mandoza.

More bad news followed in the Pretoria State Theatre on Sunday night when it was revealed contestant, Siyakha Tshayela, was kicked off the show.

The aspiring singer has an existing contract with an independent recording company, which is against the rules.

While Siyakha maintained there was no contract, the recording company insists there is.

“Due to conditions stipulated by the Idols format, we are unable to continue with a contestant that is currently involved in a legal dispute of this nature. Ms Tshayela is therefore not able to continue as a contestant,” said M-Net.

But the show had to go on — and it did.

The ladies opened the show with a fierce performance of Beyoncé’s Freedom, while the guys brought the house down with a medley of Prince’s Purple Rain and When Doves Cry.

The judges had a hand in saving only two of the contestants while the rest was up to South Africa.

More than two million votes were cast for the girls with 3.9 million votes for the guys.

Fan favourite Tebogo Louw is the only Cape Town contestant who made it into the top 10.
