GONE: Athenkosi Mandindi-Thobi, 19

Two teens 'playing' with a gun turned fatal after one shot the other in the head.

Mystery surrounds the death of this 19-year-old from Langa who was allegedly shot dead by his friend while the two were fiddling with a gun.

Athenkosi Mandindi-Thobi died on Saturday evening at the Vanguard Day Hospital after he was shot in the head at the house of his 18-year-old friend in Langa.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana says the 18-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder yesterday.

The pair were reportedly playing with a gun said to belong to the suspect’s father when it went off.

Relatives say they received reports that Athenkosi had been shot on Saturday afternoon and rushed to the house only to hear that he had been transferred to hospital.

Athenkosi’s foster mother, Nompumelelo Mandindi, 47, says: “When we got to the day hospital they told us he was being transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital but after a two-hour wait we realised he was dead when the ambulance stretcher came out empty.”

“The detective told us he had been shot in the back of the head and the bullet came out at his forehead and he was found lying at the door.

“This boy whose house he was shot at, he was a friend of his from Oaklands High School, they used to travel to school together by train.

“We don’t know for sure what happened at that house but we have lost a really sweet person who loved education and was going to make something of himself and be an example to others to show that wherever you come from does not define your future.”
