Father of two gunned down while on duty.

A dedicated crime fighter and security guard has been murdered while on duty.

Mystery surrounds the death of Ashraaf Stemmet, 39, who was shot and killed on Thursday just after 1pm in Sombo Street, KTC Gugulethu.

Ashraaf, who worked for Secupro Security, was sitting inside his work vehicle when he was gunned down.

The company believes Ashraaf had spotted criminal activity taking place at a business complex and was busy inspecting when he was shot and killed.

The dad of two was a police reservist in Mitchells Plain and Grassy Park, and a member of several neighbourhood watches.

His father Phaldie Hendricks, 53, says Ashraaf was standing outside a complex in Gugs.

“They said his colleague had already gotten out and Ashraaf was the driver. He was waiting for the gate to be opened. The next moment, the colleague saw that Ashraaf was shot.

“The shot came from the passenger side and it looks like he lifted his arm in defence.”

Asa Hendricks, 58, says her son had a passion for keeping people safe.

He had been working as a security guard for three years.

Secupro security manager Richard Steinhofel tells Daily Voice: “He must have spotted something and he was the type of guy who would not leave it, he was very motivated. It looks like the person shot him at close range and took him by surprise. I am unsure if he was armed but my understanding was that he was.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms a case of murder is being investigated and that no arrests have been made.
