Cops are on high alert in Cape Town's CBD as thousands of students marched Parliament on Wednesday ahead of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's medium term speech.
Students gathered outside Cape Town University of Technology's (CPUT) city campus before marching into the CBD.
Students from UCT, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Stellenbosch University (SU) and CPUT are expected to participate in the march to demand an answer to their call for free tertiary education and to hand over a memorandum to Gordhan.
Students from CPUT’s Bellville campus arrived on Wednesday carrying a cardboard coffin with Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande's picture on it.

Police are braced themselves and kept formation as the first students arrived at Parliament. They also cordoned the area off with barbed wire.
Tensions were high as protesters read their memorandum to Gordhan, who was heavily guarded by riot police, outside Parliament.
Gordhan accepted their memorandum before going inside to do his speech.
