Cosatu to protest steep bread prices

STRIKE THREATS: Cosatu's Tony Ehrenreich

Ehrenreich questions why the price of bread has not come down.

Cosatu in the Western Cape has threatened to strike should bread prices not tumble soon.

Secretary Tony Ehrenreich says bread prices have risen over the last few months with other cost increase.

“But when the price of wheat comes down by 12 percent there is no commensurate reduction in the price of bread. The bread companies must explain why the bread price is not coming down and how they keep their prices the same. It looks like the collusion of the prices that they were fined for in the past has not taught them to stop robbing poor people.

“If the bread prices do not follow the price reduction in wheat, then Cosatu will be embarking on a march to bread companies next week,” he warns.
