Cape RnB star gets back to roots with Athlone hit

Chad Saaiman is back in town, and is ready to “reclaim his crown” as the original Cape Flats RnB star.

The singer released a new single on Tuesday, called Nights, an upbeat song about growing up in Athlone and jolling from the Cape Flats to Camps Bay.

The singer says: “It’s like a homecoming RnB track. Because it feels like that, I was in Jo’burg for four years and being back in Cape Town now I was thinking about growing up here and reconnecting with my family.”

It cannot be overlooked that Chad is from Athlone and so is Jimmy Nevis, whose song 7764 is a celebration of his roots.

Chad also raps in Nights: “From 7764 to the billboards on Jan Smuts as we took on the town.”

He says nobody can claim ownership of the postcode 7764.

“The fact that Jimmy did a song is awesome,” says Chad. “But the 7764 really belongs to everyone of us who grew up there, and not just one of us, not even me.”

He’s often spoken to other well-known Athlone boytjies like soccer star Nathan Paulse from Ajax Cape Town, and like them, he’s very proud of where he comes from.

“Everything in that track is true, even the billboard line. When I started out, my very first modelling shoot, the ad was a billboard on the corner of Hazendal and Bokmakierie,” he explains.

And he says he’s definitely not throwing shade at anyone, even though he raps: “My big brother said I should take back the throne.

“I stepped outside cos I was gone too long. But the Prince is back and the force is strong.”

Chad says: “This is about my journey. From my first gig which was at Manhattan’s in Green Point, to the parties in Camps Bay and even when I was growing up, having an ice-cream on Sea Point Promenade.”

He’s not yet sure what the music video for Nights will look like yet.

“I hope to release the music video in the next month. I don’t want it to be too much like a tourism video for Cape Town, so maybe it will just be me in the road in Athlone,” says Chad.

Nights is available to download on iTunes and is uploaded on Chad’s Soundcloud and YouTube pages.
