Strauss to lead Toetie’s Boks against Irish.

Adriaan Strauss will be the man to lead the Springboks into its new era under coach Allister Coetzee.

Strauss was yesterday named the 57th Bok captain of all time, replacing Jean de Villiers and Fourie du Preez who led the team during Heyneke Meyer’s term.

Although the announcement was made only for the incoming series against Ireland next month, Coetzee has not ruled out the 30-year-old hooker as his long-term leader.

Coetzee explains: “The appointment was the right one, I am satisfied with the captain – I’ve got a lot of faith in the captain.

“I believe Adriaan has paid his dues, he’s represented South Africa at U19 level, U21 level through to the Springboks and has been vice captain of South Africa before.

“Although he knows this is a position for the inbound series, I’ve got no doubt that it could become a long-term appointment as well.”

Commenting on his new role, the Bulls hooker says: “I heard it for the first time this morning and I’m definitely honoured.

“The first thing that I told coach was if I look at my own ambition, it’s massive. You don’t even dream about becoming Springbok captain – it’s massive.

“I told him as well that it needs to be the best for the team and that the players need to accept that as well and I’m very thankful that they did.

“The guys have really welcomed me warmly in the position, so I’m excited and looking forward to the challenge.”
