Police are investigating a cash heist following a break-in at a café on Robben Island.
While the details are still sketchy, it’s believed “a substantial amount of money” was stolen out of a safe on the historical island in the early hours of Monday morning.
It is unclear how the skelms made their way to and from the island, or if the suspect are residents on the island.
Robben Island spokesperson Nomonde Ndlangisa confirms the theft.
“There was a break-in at the café and police were here to investigate,” she says.
“We have no further details because we are still awaiting the police report.
“At this point we can’t say how the perpetrators gained entry or the amount of money that was stolen,” she says.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut says no arrests were made.
“This office can confirm a burglary at a shop on Robben Island is being investigated,” Traut says.
“On (Monday) cash was stolen out of a safe.
“No one has been arrested as yet.”
