This 11-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet while inside her home.
Whaeecha Fortuin was standing in the kitchen of her mother’s home at the New Beginnings informal settlement in Chicago, Paarl, when a bullet tore through two shacks and hit her in the back of her head.
Her mother, Wilma Fortuin, 41, says they had just finished eating on Saturday, at about 5pm, when Whaeecha went to the kitchen.
“She said ‘mom something just shocked me’,” Wilma explains.
“And I went over to check if something might have electrocuted her but the stove was not even on. That was when I noticed the blood on the floor.
“She had been shot at the back of her head, I didn’t even want to touch her in case I did something wrong.
“We didn’t even hear any gunshots.”
Wilma says the bullet is still lodged in her child’s head.
“The doctors said the bullet was stuck and if they removed it, it might paralyse her,” she says.
“I couldn’t sleep for the two days when she was in hospital, thinking my daughter could’ve died.
“She’s staying with a relative because she doesn’t even feel safe in her own home.”
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirms a case of attempted murder is being investigated.
“It’s suspected an unknown suspect fired a shot from outside of the house,” she says.
“No one has been arrested as yet.”
