Ajax’s De Sa relishes new Cape rivalry.

AJAX Cape Town coach Roger de Sa can’t wait to do battle with new derby rivals Cape Town City.

De Sa says it’s a massive boost to the local soccer scene and he hopes to see even more Mother City clubs in the PSL in the future.

The Urban Warriors have been the city’s only top-flight representatives since Chippa United relocated to Port Elizabeth in 2014.

But with former Ajax chairman John Comitis, who left Ikamva after a bitter boardroom battle with current owners the Efstathious in 2013, launching City on Wednesday, there will be another derby soon.

And De Sa tells the Daily Voice: “I think it’s a great. It’s what football needs in the city.

“The fans will love seeing another team here. I hope another team gets promoted from the NFD soon.”

Derbies are always filled with passion. And having coached at Santos against Ajax, De Sa knows just how woelig a game between local rivals can be in the Cape.

He says: “Derbies are always up there and it always gets players up for a match. For a coach, your job is easy to motivate the dressing room.

“It’s nice to have a Cape derby again. I remember the passion of the games from my time at Santos.

“It will make the scene more competitive for sure. I think it’s fantastic.”

De Sa says he gets back to business on Monday to prepare for pre-season and finalise his squad for the new PSL season.

He says: “The players get back on Tuesday for pre-season training.”

Meanwhile City boss Comitis says he has the cream of the crop of the Black Aces side he bought to make the core of his PSL squad.

He says: “I’ve got to disclose that this is pretty much the pick of Muhsin [Ertugral] for the coming season, although he may not be here.

“But if you look at the starting line-up of the last three or four games, I think we’ve got it spot on here.

“So this is the core that delivered fourth place last season, and we want to build from this now and move forward.”
