Boks won’t follow Lions

CAUTIOUS: Bok coach Allister Coetzee

Toetie: Lions plan won’t work at Test level.

Allister Coetzee says he will not adopt the Lions blueprint for the Springboks.

And he also won’t make the Leeus almal Bokke.

The Lions are 80 minutes away from the Super Rugby title, playing rugby that has blown away the Crusaders and defending champions the Highlanders in the playoffs.

Another brilliant display of attacking rugby could see them beat the Hurricanes this Saturday (9.35am).

But while many fans would like the Green and Gold to play that way, Coetzee is wary of falling into the trap of depending too heavily on the success of the Lions.

He says: “I can’t just copy the Lions because it won’t be 15 Lions players in Springbok jerseys.

“There could be a number of Lions in the team‚ but it’s a completely different culture at the Springboks.

“Opponents will be studying how to beat the Springboks‚ not how to beat the Lions.

“We saw how well the Irish were prepared against us.”

Coetzee however, did acknowledge that back in 2007, when he was a coaching assistant for the Jake White-coached Springboks who won the Rugby World Cup in France that year, that a successful SA side plays a big role in our the Boks play.

“In 2007‚ I was part of the Springbok management when the Bulls won Super Rugby and it played a massive role in our campaign.”
