Paying close attention to what the guys are saying who are currently in the Springbok camp, it is clear that under Allister Coetzee the Springboks will know when to hold on, know when to pass, when to run and when to kick.
Springbok fans are demanding a more expansive style of play and it looks like it’s a gamble the Bok coaching staff is willing to take.
But they will also not chuck out the traditional Bok playbook completely, instead they want to achieve a balance.
Backline coach Mzwandile Stick explains: “We’re on the right track at the moment where the players are given the opportunity and the freedom – if there are opportunities for them, they must go for it.
“Otherwise, if we’re not in control of the play, there’s also a kicking system in place…
“I must also make sure that whatever I bring to the table must compliment the other guys that I’m working with – [kicking consultant] Louis Koen and [attacking coach] Johann van Graan.
“We need to find balance… if we’re not well organised as a coaching staff, it will also show on the field.
“At the moment, we’re on the right track – we know when to attack, we know when to kick also.”
