A taxi driver was hunted and gunned down outside a Cape Flats school yesterday.
While residents fear he may be the latest casualty in a deadly gang war in Delft, police sources have disputed these claims.
Sources insist the attack yesterday, in which the 40-year-old driver was ambushed outside Sunray Primary School in Main Road, Eindhoven, was an isolated incident.
The drama unfolded just after 6am as the man apparently drove from Delft-South taxi rank and was confronted by gunmen.
It is believed there was an altercation at the rank and when the driver left, he was followed and attacked.
The driver had been alone inside the taxi at the time of the shooting.
The white Toyota Quantum, which has six gunshot holes at the driver’s side, belongs to Nyeliso Tours.
The Daily Voice attempted to reach the owner but he did not respond to calls.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel André Traut, says they have yet to determine the motive behind the attack: “This office can confirm that the circumstances surrounding a murder are being investigated after a 40-year-old taxi driver was shot and killed at 6.20am by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested.
“The motive is yet to be determined.”
The attack comes after a suspected drug dealer was gunned down in Mackensie Street, Eindhoven, on Saturday.
Michael Moor, 39, had been walking in the street when gunmen opened fire.
A resident, who asked not to be named, says gangsters have been fighting for turf in Delft.
A police source says Delft “was bleeding” after a spate of gang-related shootings.
He said the area is “red” following Moor’s murder, but doesn’t believe yesterday’s attack was linked to gangsterism.
“A taxi driver was shot and killed [yesterday] but this was not gang war, there was some altercation at the rank and when he left there, he was attacked,” says the cop.
