More than 3 200 blankets have already been collected, with more being donated every day.

The Twitter Blanket Drive tweeted up a storm and spread a lot of warmth in town over the weekend.

The campaign started seven years ago when Melanie Minnaar sent out a tweet asking mense how they could help the poor during winter.

This year the #TBD2016 campaign grew across South Africa and more than 3 200 blankets have already been collected, with more being donated every day.

This year’s drive kicked off last Thursday when Chad Saaiman and The Black Ties kept the crowd entertained at the Protea Fire & Ice hotel.

Similar events took place in Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria, but it was the Kaap that collected the most blankets, nearly 2 000.

National co-ordinator Merentia van der Vent says Capetonians’ generosity warms her heart.

“I will never forget a few years ago when a representative of one of the beneficiaries, Operation Shoebox, told me how a family of four had each received a blanket and were quite stunned and grateful about this,” says Merentia.

“What was heartbreaking was they told the NGO they’ve never owned blankets. It is just heartsore to know that some people out there in informal living areas, cannot afford something even (basic) like a blanket.”
