The man with the golden voice is winning South Africans over one vote at a time.
In a highly contested episode of SA’s Got Talent on Sunday, Derek Plaatjies received the most public votes to book his spot in the final.
The singer and guitarist from Saron, who now lives in Muizenberg, brought mense to tears with his rendition of Justin Bieber’s hit Love Yourself.
As Derek, 22, effortlessly hit those high notes that he’s become famous for, the audience couldn’t help themselves and started clapping along, with the judges jiving in their seats.
During the theatre auditions, Derek went straight into the semifinals after Shado gave him her golden buzzer, and she couldn’t contain her pride during his performance on Sunday.
“He gave me a perfect golden act,” she said.
“I love your honesty in the way you sing. I was looking at your eyes and you really do mean everything you sing about. So whatever happens, you’re going to shine because you love yourself so much.”
Jamie agreed, saying: “You’ve got big gees, boetie.”
Michael Jackson impersonator Eagan Feb and dance crew Kryptonite Dance Academy also received a high number of votes.
But the judges voted to send the Pretoria dance crew into the finals.
After the show, Derek wrote on Facebook: “This means so much to me. You showed me that you cared about this Saron boytjie. Your votes = your love and support.
“My hart wil bars! Finals, hier kom ons! Dankie almal, julle sal nooit weet hoe dankbaar ek is nie.”
Derek and Kryptonite Dance academy join singer Phoenix from Manenberg and Pantsula crew The Professionals from Langa in the finals, meaning Cape Town now has three out of four acts in the finals.
And next week, they will be joined by two more acts who will battle it out for the R500 000 grand prize.
