New Ajax Cape Town boss Stanley Menzo hopes his tunnel vision can turn his team’s fortunes around.
The Urban Warriors changed management last week after Roger de Sa quit following a nightmare start to the season as they side failed to win in eight games.
And Menzo believes concentrating on their own game can bring that much-needed first victory and kickstart their season.
The Dutchman is making no bones about the fact that he doesn’t know much about his opponents Free State Stars in his debut match tonight (6pm).
The former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper says: “That’s maybe the positive side of me not knowing the league and the opponent, so I don’t have to think too much about the opponent.
“I know a lot more from my team and my players, so I have to spent my energy on my team.”
“We have to try to think about ourselves first and try to play the game we want to play.
“Of course we have an opponent, but the moment we play our own game, we’re stronger.”
Menzo has already stamped his style of play on the Urban Warriors, who are playing a possession-based game now.
It’s a change from the way De Sa set his team up, with counterattack being the modus operandi with confidence low.
Menzo says: “My philosophy is simple, I want to win football games.
“I’m from the Ajax Amsterdam family and, for us, winning comes from playing good football from a good structure.
“The Ajax way is always to make sure your team has the ball as much as possible to deny the opponents opportunities.”
