Springbok coach Allister Coetzee has created a safety net for himself ahead of their Rugby Championship clash with Argentina in Salta on Saturday (9.40pm).
And he named it Morné Steyn.
With Elton Jantjies starting the match against the Pumas, Coetzee opted to bring in the 32-year-old Steyn to help calm the nerves and also take some of the pressure off Jantjies.
Coetzee explains his decision to bring in Steyn for Juan de Jongh on the bench as follows: “I just feel that Morné Steyn brings a lot of calmness and a sense of appreciating the conditions here in Salta.
“He’s proven last year that with his kicking prowess that he can turn a side like Argentina and he can capitalise when the opportunity is there – he’s done that, he’s been around.
“One has got to give Elton Jantjies enough opportunities and support in his role, it’s only his sixth Test cap as a No.10. He’s also learning lessons and hopefully the progress will come…”
