IN FORM BOK: SAs Faf de Klerk

Toetie: Boks’ best 23 can match All Blacks.

That’s the word from Bok coach Allister Coetzee.

The All Blacks named their squad for the Championship yesterday, with a star like Damian McKenzie left out, and Coetzee will announce his team on Saturday.

A lot has been made this past season of the gap between NZ’s Super Rugby teams and their South African counterparts

Coetzee, however, believes that when the Boks clash with the All Blacks, franchise rugby counts for nothing as it will be the best 23 of South Africa against the best 23 of New Zealand.

And he is adamant that SA have the quality to match Steve Hansen’s world champions.

Coetzee says: “What we have to understand is that New Zealand’s got, if you look at it the way I look at it, 100-odd top-class players.

“We might not be that fortunate and we might sit with a number less [than that].

“But when it comes to selecting national teams, they can only select 23 players… it’s important for us to select 23 players and the best players.

“[There is] a significant difference in how many All Blacks the Highlanders have in comparison to our five franchises and that’s the perception, it makes them stronger.

“I’m happy with the quality that we’ve got.”
