3 bust for double murder

GUNNED DOWN: Diego Philander, 18, and Nazeer Kiewit, 20

Suspected killers of Lentegeur High School friends are to appear in court.

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of two friends less than 24 hours after they were shot.

The trio are expected in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court today on charges of murder.

Diego Philander, 18, and Nazeer Kiewit, 20, were on their way to a tuck shop in Madeliefie Street, Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, on Sunday evening when they were killed.

Diego was shot in his neck and Nazeer was struck in his head multiple times.

Both were learners at Lentegeur High School.

Their families had no knowledge of the suspects’ arrests when they spoke to the Daily Voice yesterday.

However, police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed three people were nabbed.

”(Police) can confirm that three suspects, aged 23, 24 and 41 years old respectively were arrested (on Monday) in connection with this double murder,” Van Wyk says.

“They are expected to appear at Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court (today).

“The suspects face charges of double murder.”

Diego died on his grandmothers 62nd birthday and instead of celebrating Eid on Monday, Nazeer’s family had to prepare for his janaazah.

Nazeer’s heartbroken dad, Rameez, 48, says: “I don’t know (about the arrest) but now I am glad,” he says with a sigh of relief.

“The (investigating) officer is doing a great job, he’s putting all his efforts into solving the case.

“I thank Allah for that.”

Rameez says he was surprised by all the support the families have been getting.

“There has been great support from the community,” he says.

“I was shocked to see all the people (at the janaazah) and to see what an impact Diego and Nazeer made in the community.

“I am very proud of what my son has become. Everyone who came to the house yesterday (on Eid) left crying.

“It was not a good day. As a family we are still in mourning.

The father says he wants justice for his son and Diego.

“I know Allah will give them justice, I know Allah will guide the court,” he adds.
